About Lahaina Maui
Known as the "Jewel in the crown of Maui", Lahaina town
is the most visited spot on Maui. Situated between the calm waters of the Auau Channel facing the island of Lanai
and the lush peaks and valleys of Mauna Kahalawai,
Lahaina offers a warm Aloha to all who visits. Starting in the early 1800's as a Whaling port, Lahaina slowly
developed from uncivilized sailor beginnings to a respectable settlement. Missionaries came and, eventually,
cleaned up the small town, using religious persuasion and of course establishing a local curfew, fort, and jail.
Visit Banyan Tree Square, which features
an exceptionally large banyan tree. Planted in 1873 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the
missionaries. Today, the town's historic buildings have been restored and visitors can enjoy the frontier-like
tropical outpost, which was once Lahaina. Explore Front Street and the activity that the many stores, galleries,
and restaurants create. Other sites to include are the Brick Palace, the reconstructed ruins of Lhain Fort, the
Old Courthouse, and the Old Lighthouse.
